All I Possess

Leaving behind false traditions in search of the true Jesus

No Way, That’s Just Too Easy!

The brass serpent story tells us there are people of one group who look to a second group’s religion and say “No, I can’t believe that. That’s too easy.”

I’m fascinated, looking back on my LDS life, thinking I was in the second group. I was in the correct group looking at the bronze serpent, following Jesus. I was the one being judged by the first group when they said my belief was “too easy.”

Now that I think about this….. I can’t think of a single person or a single persuasion that has EVER said “I just can’t believe in the LDS church. It’s too easy.”

However, I can think of one religious group who holds this attitude clearly, across the board, pointing to another religious group. “That can’t possibly be the truth. It’s just too easy.” It’s “cheap grace.”

How quickly some dismiss the gospel of Jesus Christ, for being too easy.

Even believers of the Book of Mormon — where this story is mentioned FOUR times* (the New Testament only refers to it ONCE in John 3:14-15 where Jesus simply gives the instruction to be born again, with no other qualifiers) — will say that being saved by faith alone through grace alone is “too easy.”

That floors me!!

I try to think back to what my attitude was when I thought my works-based religion was the “easy” way, even though not a single person has EVER called Mormonism too easy. I have no answer. I just never thought it through!

The same as everything else in Mormonism. I just never thought it through….

* 1 Ne 17:41, 2 Nephi 25:20, Alma 33:18-22, Helaman 8:14-15 — These verses actually incriminate the LDS church. They clearly show that the people who “would not look because they did not believe it would heal them” are not saved.
