We see an interesting connection in John 5:18–
“For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.”
The Pharisees were astounded at the thought that anyone would make themselves equal with God! Or think they were His literal offspring and able to do great miracles the way God does.
I know the Pharisees were harsh, misdirected people, but in this instance they are right. It is very wrong for anyone to say they can learn what God knows, that they can too be a God.
We are NOT Gods in Training!
Many worldviews teach ascendance, the idea that we can overcome this mortal state, that we can find our own peace and transcendence. Nirvana!
But Christianity is the opposite — it teaches that we are unworthy, lowly, and can never be good enough for God on our own. We can’t understand God. If we ever do miracles, it’s only when His Spirit indwells us and works through us, but only for God’s glory!
Last Saturday I curiously logged onto an LDS zoom call about quantum physics. I was curious to hear this—something I was totally fascinated with, believed 100% and wanted to understand fully, just a couple years ago—and to see what I’d think now. I prayed for God to give me insight and let me know truth.
Well, I listened for less than 5 minutes.
And I was sick at what I heard.
Yes, it sounded very familiar. It was things I was well versed in.
But this time, all I heard was New Age and occultism.
Yikes!!!!
It was a workshop on spoon bending and the powers of the mind. The idea was that with quantum physics, we can attain special powers and learn to be like God! We are His literal children, after all (that’s where the LDS part comes in), and it’s our job to study the laws of the universe!!
It made me sick, but of course it makes you wonder. Is that God who is behind the powers of the mind?
Later that day, I opened up Tim Keller’s Reason For God and got the answer to that question. It was a second witness, another answer to my prayer confirming my path of Christianity and my new worldview, when I just happened to come across this paragraph:
“The most instructive thing about this text is, however, what it says about the purpose of Biblical miracles. They lead not simply to cognitive belief, but to worship, to awe and wonder. Jesus’s miracles in particular were never magic tricks, designed only to impress and coerce. You never see him say something like: “See that tree over there? Watch me make it burst into flames!” Instead, he used miraculous power to heal the sick, feed the hungry, and raise the dead.” (p.99)
The answer is no, God doesn’t bend spoons and God doesn’t do occult tricks just to impress people and make them curious about the supernatural world.
God’s miracles always have purpose! They are used to glorify Him, to showcase His power—not our own—and to bring people into His church.
Is spoon bending doing any of these things??
Are New Age Mormons getting any closer to the Jesus of the Bible? Or is their delusion driving them further away, into darkness?
Another question I was wondering about from this experience is, to what extend can humans grasp God? Can we really understand how God works and try to learn His supernatural ways, as Mormon “quantum physics” fans claim?
So I went to the Bible on this. Here’s what I found:
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)
This is probably the most well-known passage showing the vast difference between God’s mind and ours.
Then we have Romans 11:33–34:
“Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” (See also Isaiah 40:13)
This passage in Job 11:7-9 shows us God is beyond full human comprehension: “Can you fathom the mysteries of God? Can you probe the limits of the Almighty? They are higher than the heavens above—what can you do? They are deeper than the depths below—what can you know?”
The we have Ecclesiastes 3:11 saying “He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man’s heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end.”
and Proverbs 25:2 saying “It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.”

Wow! Isn’t the Bible terrific?
It really established who God is and who we are. How great and awe-inspiring He is, yet how lost and humble we are. He has taught and given us certain things, but there is much we just can’t understand as humans.
God was not a human, and we cannot be gods.
Spiritual gifts (like prophecy, healing, discernment) are empowered by the Holy Spirit, not the mind.
It is a surprise and privilege when we see Him work miracles. We are blessed when He reveals understanding to advance science. But this is for our good and His glory — not for parlor tricks.
