Polygamy: Why Didn’t Joseph Follow his Own Revelation?

This is the seventh in a series. You can read the first here, the second herethe third herethe fourth here, the fifth here, the sixth here.

In D&C 132:61-63, in this “New and Everlasting Covenant,” the reluctant men are assured this law is not adultery, as long as their additional wives are virgins.

“…if he espouse the second, and they are virgins, and have vowed to no other man, then is he justified; he cannot commit adultery for they are given unto him; for he cannot commit adultery with that that belongeth unto him and to no one else.”

Yet we see that Joseph Smith totally took married women on as his additional wives. This isn’t just polygamy, it’s polyandry.

So why didn’t he follow the instructions?

Furthermore, why didn’t God follow his own instructions given in the revelation? The revelation says if Emma resists she would be destroyed.

And I command mine handmaid, Emma Smith, to abide and cleave unto my servant Joseph, and to none else. But if she will not abide this commandment she shall be destroyed, saith the Lord; for I am the Lord thy God, and will destroy her if she abide not in my law.” (verse 54)

Well, spoiler: she wasn’t.

Somehow, this magnificent revelation was given by God Himself, to Joseph Smith, and they both forgot to read it.
