All I Possess

Leaving behind false traditions in search of the true Jesus

If Our Neighborhood Had Ears

When you have a dog, you go on a lot of walks. And walks are a great time to muse. To ponder and discuss. To think aloud.

My husband and I go on walks several times a week. This is when we get uninterrupted time to get things off our chest.

In the 5 month interim between my stepping away and his, these walks consisted of my epiphanies, his worries, his questioning, but still bonding, overall.

Then after his experience, as he began considering things for himself, it turned into more genuine open-minded discussion. I remember the first thing he said that made me realize he’s actually starting to get it! We were talking about baptism for the dead and he commented on how strange it is that dead people rely on us for salvation when salvation should only be a matter of what Christ did. Yes! His eyes have been opened!

And now our walks are full on “I read this today….” and “what do you think the Christian response is to this doctrine…?”

Or even straight up “How does the LDS church get away with this!??”

Today, for example, we discussed the Christian concept of Satan’s fall and the LDS concept of pre-mortal life.

At some points in our conversation, as we pass the fenced yards of ward members, our voices are a bit quieter. If only they knew….

Like when we had the conversation about what our parents did in the temple, and how were they OK with that? How did they sweetly encourage us to go get our endowment, knowing what it used to be?

But I love our doctrinal discussions. It’s like a honeymoon with Christianity as our eyes are opened to so many new ways of thinking about things. Or a bitter divorce with someone who sold you on crazy lies and you just realized what has been going on!

I’m a philosopher. A theology gal. And wow, I’ve never been more attracted to my husband 😂😍

This is what we did when we dated. We sat and talked. We walked and talked. Great dates! We are low maintenance people.

But I’m just so glad we can experience this together now. ❤️

**Watch for this conversation on our upcoming podcast! Woohoo!!🙌
