Just read a talk from 2021 by Russell Nelson. Pretty disturbed by it, to be honest.
I only made it halfway through cuz I couldn’t take it anymore.
But let’s dig in.
He begins by giving us a truth: that you need a firm foundation in Jesus Christ.
And then we veer off into blatant logical fallacy — the temple is equivalent to Jesus. So your foundation needs to be the temple. Basically.
And the rest of his talk is about the temple.
“Whenever the Lord has had a people on the earth who will obey His word, they have been commanded to build temples.”
Hmmm… except for when he came in the flesh and taught everyone his gospel, and has his apostles grow a church….
Must have slipped his mind.🤷♀️
Not to mention the entire 2.5 THOUSAND years between Adam and the Israelites when there was no temple/tabernacle structure?
For a person who has been set apart and entrusted to teach the Word of God, this is a big problem when they say their own words and make their own claims without checking it against scripture.
This is very troubling and should be very concerning to Latter-day Saints.
And secondly…. Check out this next quote:
“The Savior and His doctrine are the very heart of the temple. Everything taught in the temple, through instruction and through the Spirit, increases our understanding of Jesus Christ.”
For reals???
Everything taught in the temple increases our understanding of Jesus Christ?
How do Masonic handshakes increase my understanding of Jesus Christ???
How does using a hand gesture that symbolizes slitting my abdomen and catching my own entrails increase my understanding of Jesus Christ?
How does showing the Father and Jesus as two separate physical entities increase my understanding of Jesus Christ?
(I understood a lot more about Jesus when I read Lectures on Faith and the original account of the first vision, and put that silly notion to rest. And then I read — what was that book called? — oh, The Bible, that taught me who Jesus actually is.)
How does promising to give everything I own to a corporation increase my understanding of Jesus Christ?
How does promising to not laugh loudly increase my understanding of Jesus Christ?
How does performing “dead works” increase my understanding of Jesus Christ? Dead works that are a “mockery before God, denying the mercies of Christ, and the power of his Holy Spirit” (Moroni 8:22-23).
How does adding to the Doctrine of Christ (3 Nephi 11:39-40), where baptism was the only ordnance—plain and simple—increase my understanding of Jesus Christ?
How does being promised to inherit thrones, dominions, and principalities increase my understanding of Jesus Christ?
“For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places” (Ephesians 6:12)
**Principalities are not a good thing**
Dominion is not something for a humble servant like me.
But one more question…
How does a veil between me and the Holy of Holies increase my understanding of Jesus Christ?
My understanding increased tenfold the day I put that veil away. Like Jesus did in the first place. Remember that day he died??
Oh yeah, that.
Reading the Bible has increased my understanding of Jesus Christ in a way the temple never did.
Going to Christian church has increased my understanding of Jesus Christ.
Studying Christianity has increased my understanding of Jesus Christ.
All the LDS church did was muddy up the waters.
