I’ve heard some ex-Mormons say, I wonder if the church is self-destructing on purpose? They put out these “gospel topics essays” about other materials that now expose some awful, messed up stuff!
(or at least expose the fact that the stories we were told growing up aren’t the prevailing narrative anymore, which is suspicious in itself)
People are waking up and leaving the Mormon church right and left.
And a lot of times, it’s the church’s own doing.
You can get all the “anti Mormon” arguments you need right on their own website.
This is the story of the majority of ex Mormons I talk to.
Could it be that they are intentionally sabotaging their own institution and causing people to leave??
I think so.
Why?
Because by far, most people who leave the LDS church become atheists or agnostics. Win for Satan!
Why?
They had enough.
They are completely done with religion.
There is so much betrayal and trauma coming out of a high-demand religion (this is a euphemism for a cult), how can you trust again?
Like my agnostic brother-in-law said, shrugging, “I’ve been wrong before.”
When you’ve been manipulated, abused, lied to, and betrayed …. Most people are not gonna sign back up real quick.
So, yes, I do think it was Satan’s big idea to build up a huge church, string people along and then, when the truth couldn’t be held back any longer, to bring all this directly to the members’ attention so they will run crying to atheism for comfort.
Is there any other evidence that the LDS church is self-sabotaging?
Well…
They reduced church time by 33%, which decreases time in the scriptures and decreases fellowship.
They don’t let sacrament meeting speakers study for their own talks anymore, which would increase their knowledge of the scriptures.
They did away with many activities outside of church time.
They don’t push ministering house visits anymore, and don’t follow up about the assignments.
They replaced scripture-study seminary time with feel-good, fun talks for teens.
They replaced the requirement for teens to read all the scriptures with just reading a few key passages.
Conference talks are more and more solely about cringe-worthy topics like temples and garments.
I could go on.
The church has changed indeed.
It’s not faith promoting. It’s not a strengthening community. It’s not focused on education. It’s not focused on the Jesus of the Bible at all.
It’s empty.
And we can all feel it now.
Why aren’t the ex-Mormons going to Christianity?
Other than the fact that they’re giving up on organized religion, this discussion wouldn’t be complete without calling out the obvious problem:
They’ve been indoctrinated to be suspicious and to look down on both Catholics and Protestants.
These denominations are abominations.
They don’t have very much truth. They don’t have authority. They are very misled.
They believe the trinity. Yuck! They listen to the Nicean Creed! Ugh!
Someone told me, “How could you go to Christianity? They think King David was forgiven!” Gasp! Oh my goodness, talk about disturbing false doctrines!🙄 You can’t go around believing Jesus forgives sinners!
Yes, this is very much a problem that Mormons have been explicitly taught that there is nowhere else to go.
They recognize all the lies they’re been told except this one.
Very sad situation.
“Everything of saving significance in the Church stands or falls on the truthfulness of the Book of Mormon” (Jeffrey Holland) This leaves no room for the Bible or Christianity. They present false dichotomy to you: follow Jesus in the Mormon church, or be an atheist.

Here’s a great interview with the founder of “Jesus For Mormons,” who discusses how so many ex-Mormons go right toward atheism instead of considering Christianity.
