All I Possess

Leaving behind false traditions in search of the true Jesus

Do Not Go Beyond What is Written

Let me share a scripture I found last Sunday that hit me pretty hard as anti-Book of Mormon.

In 1 Corinthians 1-4, Paul is responding to a disunity situation in Corinth. People are bragging over who they heard the gospel from, claiming a special baptism, and causing contention by arguing over points they learned from their preferred teachers.

And what’s Paul’s response?

We are all followers of Jesus, and Jesus only.

It doesn’t matter who your baptism was done by. It doesn’t matter who your teacher is.

“Do not go beyond what is written. Then you will not be puffed up in being a follower of one of us over against the other.” (1 Cor 4:6)

See what happens when you “add to the Bible”?? If you go beyond the official word given to you, you’ll become puffed up in being the follower of a certain person.

Like Joseph Smith.

Or Russell M. Nelson.

I don’t know how it’s wrong for the Corinthians to brag about their better baptism and think they know more because of what their teacher taught them, but for this not to apply to Mormons.

Mormons are prouder of their correct baptism, their heritage and prophets than anyone I know.

And yes, it has caused a major problem of being puffed up.

If this has come from a book that went beyond the original writings of Jesus’s apostles, then that is a problem.

So just another way to look at it.

But most definitely, following a human leader and what he says above what is written in the scriptures is condemned.

“So then, no more boasting about human leaders!” (1 Cor 3:21)

Funny how LDS people don’t ever read this chapter….
