All I Possess

Leaving behind false traditions in search of the true Jesus

Working Backwards: Apostasy & Keys

In LDS theology, we say that there is a cycle that has been repeated several times in the history of the world, each time being called a “dispensation.”

A dispensation is when God manifests himself to a prophet, reveals doctrine, and establishes a church or group of followers. But inevitably, that church will into apostasy, so then destruction will come. And then a new dispensation will begin, with a new dispensation “head” (leader).

So, they say there was a “Great Apostasy” after the apostles died in the ancient church. After several hundred years of the dark ages, God revealed himself to Joseph Smith, called him as a prophet, and established (restored) His “true church” again.

When will the next dispensation be? When Christ returns for the Millennial reign.

So, let’s work backward. The new dispensation is coming. The new dispensation head is Jesus Christ himself.

What needs to happen before that? Destruction. Yes, we are expecting that.

But what needs to happen before destruction?

Apostasy.

(Gasp!) You mean God’s “true church” will fall into apostasy? Never!

All I’m saying is, the pattern has been set. It’s happened several times before. Why would this time be any different?

Because they told us they would never lead us astray!

Yeah, sounds like something a cult leader would say. Something that someone in apostasy would say. Of course man can lead you astray. The option — and likelihood — is always there. It’s a very real possibility. Remember that’s why Jesus told us not to trust in the arm of the flesh (Jeremiah 17:5).

Turns out the Bible is FULL of warnings about false prophets. (I didn’t really know that before, but you know, I’ve been reading my Bible lately.)

Alright I’ve made my point.

Now let’s talk about “keys.” Mormons believe that their leaders have passed down keys of authority since Joseph Smith, who received them from Peter, James, and John in angelic form.

Mormons also believe that prior to the second coming, Christ will come back and take the keys unto Himself again.

So one day I was pondering.

Why would He take them back unless they’d been abused?

Seems like a really good reason to take them back.

Just sayin’.
