Everyone knows God is omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, never changing, and has existed eternally.
…except Mormons.
They think God had an origin. He was a child of his “Heavenly Father” and had a mortal life like us, and then became God.
(It’s amazing how many Mormon doctrines I explain now and think “Oh my gosh, that’s ridiculous. How embarrassing to admit I ever believed that!)
Mormons think God the Father is everybody’s dad, even Jesus and Lucifer. So Jesus is our literal brother from before the earth was made. He was created spiritually just as we were. He is becoming a God (I guess he has completed that process now) just as we are.
And the same about the Father, back when he was a spirit child.
This whole story makes God so relatable, don’t you think? Just a regular guy!
I do think it’s nice and quaint to think of us all hanging out as as spiritual family, and then one day Father announces that he’s going to send us to earth for a mortal life. Because, you know, that’s how you become a God.
Wow.
Okay fast forward to March 2024 when I first went to The Well. I wanted to go visit to get pumped up with some Christian pop music and an actual speaker who knows how to give a sermon.
I was not expecting what happened.
We sang songs.
Songs that kinda messed with my psyche.
The first time, I was like “Okay, nice song. They’re giving glory to Jesus. Eh, we Mormons don’t really do that…”
And then it was “Oh now they’re saying Jesus is the only God….”
And then “I owe it all to Jesus” (I had never considered that) and “Only Jesus is worthy.”
(Did I mention I’m a lyrics person?)
Only Jesus is worthy? What in the heck? My whole life, I’ve been told that I am worthy. I need to measure up. I need to live a clean life. I need to prove myself worthy.
I sat through worthiness interviews — and passed with flying colors!
I was worthy! Me! I’m the one who is worthy!
I scanned my special pass to get into the temple and walked in proudly. I am worthy to be here! I’m so privileged!
And now these Christians are telling me Only Jesus is worthy?
One day it actually hit me.
My jaw dropped.
I am nothing! I rely on Jesus! I owe it all to Jesus! Who else is Worthy? Only you, Jesus!
I bawled like a baby.
Wow! (And not sarcastic this time.)
Wow.
And let me tell you, God is not a relatable guy. That’s why He’s so amazing! That’s why He’s such a wonder!! Having this concept of God only makes him greater.
***I need to clarify for the sake of my friends: when I use the word “Mormon,” I’m using it in the common vernacular, meaning The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Technically there are many other branches of Mormonism who do not believe these things. It is basically only the Brigham Young branch that teaches all the “weird stuff.” The other branches are much more mainstream Christian; they just hold the Book of Mormon as additional scripture.
