Leaving behind false traditions in search of the true Jesus

The Doctrine of Christ

Repeatedly, in many places in the Book of Mormon, the “Doctrine of Christ” is taught. This is the recipe for Salvation. How do we follow Jesus to eternal life?

(1) Exercise faith in Him

(2) Repent of your sins

(3) Be baptized by water

(4) Be baptized with fire (or receive the Holy Ghost) and keep that Spirit in you as you Endure to the end.

2 Nephi 31 is the main chapter that outlines these steps, but this recipe is found in a hundred other places, all over the book.

And never once in the book are more ordinances mentioned as needful to inherit eternal life.

In fact, Jesus himself touches on this idea–What about adding more to the Doctrine of Christ? In 3 Nephi 11, Jesus teaches the Nephites about salvation: “I will declare unto you my doctrine” (verse 31). He tells them to believe in him, “repent and become as a little child” (verse 37), be baptized, and be visited “with fire and with the Holy Ghost” (verse 35).

But then he says something very definitive: “And whoso shall declare more or less than this, and establish it for my doctrine, the same cometh of evil, and is not built upon my rock; but he buildeth upon a sandy foundation, and the gates of hell stand open to receive such” (verse 40).

The LDS/Mormon church has indeed added more to the simple, pure, beautiful Doctrine of Christ. Adding new commandments, yes, but most egregiously, adding additional ordinances that are required to enter His presence. And not only are extra rituals and performances required, but they come at a cost; nobody gets a temple recommend without paying 10% of their income to the church. But that’s a topic for another day….

And according to Christ’s own words, hell is ready to receive those who profess extra ordinances.
